Commission on API Affairs

The Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs advises the Mayor and advocates for the interests of the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community in the District.

The Commission consists of at least 15 members appointed by the Mayor. Commissioners must be DC residents.  They reflect the demographic, geographic, and ethnic diversity of the API community. A chairperson is appointed by the Mayor. If needed, the Mayor may appoint other government representatives to the Commission.

The Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs duties include:
  • Advising and assisting with the development of mechanisms and structures in the government to respond to the community's needs,
  • Advising on government policies and programs,
  • Serving as a liaison to private organizations in the community,
  • Promoting public awareness of government programs, and
  • Issuing an annual report on APIs to the Mayor.
